Youth Transition Program

Published Nov-19-2008

One program that helps students with disabilities transition from school to paid, competitive employment, or post-secondary education is the Youth Transition Program (YTP). YTP operates as a partnership between Oregon's Department of Human Services, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, (OVRS), the Department of Education, local school districts, and the University of Oregon. The program is currently in 115 public high schools around the state. The first step in the YTP program is to help students identify a goal and come up with a plan to reach that goal. The student, a school transition specialist, and a vocational counselor work with the student to develop a career plan. The student drives the process – their interests, skills and preferences are incorporated directly into their individual plans.

YTP helps prepare participants for meaningful competitive employment or career related training after high school. Through the YTP, students receive (a) transition planning focused on post school goals, (b) instruction in academic, vocational and independent living and personal social areas, (c) community-based work experience while in the program, and assistance to secure employment or enter postsecondary education upon leaving the program; and (d) follow up support for up to 1 year after leaving the program to help youth negotiate the uncertainties of the transition years.
