A Snapshot of the Halsey Economy

Halsey accounts for a small share of Linn Count's overall employment. Its 1,277 jobs account for 3 percent of the county's employment. However, Halsey is very significant when it come to the manufacturing sector. Nearly 56 percent of Halsey's jobs are in manufacturing. Manufacturing also has very high average annual wages in Halsey; the annual average in 2006 was $67,289, more than twice Linn County's average annual wage. The high wages in Halsey's manufacturing and wholesale trade sectors contribute to the town having a very high annual wage – $49,511 compared to $33,486 for Linn County.

A Profile of Residents of Halsey
 
Resident workers in Halsey are younger than the workers of Linn and Benton counties and Oregon's workforce. Less than 13 percent are age 55 and older; that compares with 16 percent in Linn and Benton counties and 15 percent statewide. Halsey has a slightly higher percentage of high-wage workers (earning more than $3,400 per month) compared with Oregon and Linn and Benton counties. Halsey also has a lower percentage of low-wage workers (earning less than $1,200 per month) than the two counties and the state. As we might expect with Halsey's manufacturing sector, 27 percent of the residents work in the manufacturing sector, in Oregon only 13 percent of jobs are in manufacturing.

Nearly half (47%) of the working residents in Halsey work in Linn County. Lane County follows with one-in-five workers (21%). Benton County is not far behind with 18 percent of Halsey's workers commuting there to work. Albany and Corvallis are the two cities that employ the most Halsey residents.

Halsey matches Linn and Benton counties' averages with their percentage of high school graduates. Halsey lags behind Linn County and the state with only 8 percent of residents having a bachelor's degree or higher.

Population Growth
 
Halsey's population growth of about 8 percent between 2000 and 2007 has been slower than statewide growth (10%), but slightly faster than Linn County's population growth (6%). Halsey's population has grown from 724 residents to 780 residents between 2000 and 2007.
