Losing a Job Means More Than Losing an Income

Published Dec-15-2009

If you have recently lost a job, or are having an especially difficult time finding a job, you know how your situation can take an emotional toll on you and those around you. If you know someone in this situation, understand that along with not having a pay check, they may have a loss of self-worth or motivation. They may feel sluggish or sad. And they may be very irritable and emotional. These are common symptoms of something known as post-job-loss depression. The loss of employment is a traumatic event for many people, and many find it difficult to be motivated toward finding new employment due to their depressed state.

Unfortunately, this problem is only compounded by the fact that job loss often leads to other problems such as financial and marital struggles. Here are some ways to prevent or lessen the effects of post-job-loss depression.

  • Eat healthily - plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise regularly - even short walks boost your endorphins
  • Make looking for work your new full-time job - see page 34
  • Spend time with family and friends
  • Create a tighter budget - avoiding financial problems will reduce the amount of stress felt later on

Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help with feelings of depression and sadness. We all need help at times. Regaining a positive, optimistic outlook about your job search increases the chances that you will find employment. For more information about, or assistance with, feelings of sadness or depression contact your community mental health program by going to www.oregon.gov/DHS/mentalhealth/.
