Summer brings increased employment opportunities to Region 5 in such outdoor activities as agriculture, construction, and logging. In addition, tourism related to outdoor recreation at the coast and in the Cascade Mountains also increases, and along with it, employment opportunities in associated industries such as hotels and restaurants. The unemployment rate generally increases during the summer from a surge of students entering the labor force looking for work.
