Recent trends in Northeast Oregon have been decidedly negative.

In Baker County, through the first two-thirds of 2009, the unemployment rate averaged at least four full percentage points more than it did in the corresponding period of 2008. Baker County's March 2009 jobless rate of 13.3 percent was a 12-year high. Nonfarm job counts from January through August 2009 shrank nearly 3 percent from the levels measured in January through August 2008.
