Recent trends in Southeast Oregon have steadied somewhat following a very harsh recession.

In Grant County, the unemployment rate climbed to an average of 13.4 percent in 2009, the highest since 1998. The rate subsided a bit through the first five months of 2010 but remained squarely in double-digit territory. Nonfarm employment declined in Grant County for the fifth consecutive year in 2009, the longest ongoing downtrend anywhere in Oregon.
