Recent trends in Southeast Oregon have been very negative.

In Grant County, 2009 began with a January unemployment rate of 19.1 percent - the highest since March 1998. Although the local jobless rate moderated somewhat since then, through August it still averaged more than four full percentage points higher than last year's level. Similarly, January 2009's total nonfarm employment estimate of 2,210 was Grant County's lowest monthly job count since April 1987.
