Fast Growth for STEM Employment in the Portland Tri-County AreaJanuary 3, 2019
As defined by the Brookings Institute, STEM occupations require a high level of knowledge in one or more core STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and math. Of the 223 STEM occupations with data available for the Portland Tri-County area (Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties), 188 had annual median wages higher than the region’s annual median of $44,428 in 2018. Higher wages mean higher education requirements; over half of these occupations require a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree.
Total employment in the Portland Tri-County area is projected to grow by 12.7 percent from 2017 to 2027, but 132 STEM occupations are projected to grow at a rate faster than average. The fourth largest STEM occupation, software developers, is projected to increase its employment to more than 14,000 by 2027.
