As defined by the Brookings Institute, STEM occupations require a high level of knowledge in one or more core STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and math. About one out of five jobs in Oregon are found in STEM occupations. These are high-paying jobs, with an annual average wage of $76,458 compared with the Portland Metro average of $59,527 in 2016. Higher wages mean higher education requirements; candidates should have a bachelor's degree or higher to remain competitive in the STEM job market.

Many STEM Occupations Projected to Grow Faster than Average
Total employment in the Portland Metro area is projected to grow by 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, but 85 STEM occupations are projected to grow at a rate faster than average. Three occupations – web developers; health diagnosing and treating practitioners, all other; and operations research analysts – will grow at rates over 40 percent through 2024.
