Hood River County Visitors Logged One Million Overnight Stays in 2017

Dean Runyan Associates (www.deanrunyan.com) recently released Oregon Travel Impacts (1992 - 2017p), a study detailing the significance of the travel industry in Oregon and its 36 counties. According to the study, direct travel spending in Oregon reached $11.8 billion in 2017.

Direct travel spending in Hood River County reached $111.4 million in 2017 – a jump of 10.6 percent over 2016’s $100.8 million. Overnight visitors represented the biggest slice of travel spending, shelling out $80.9 million in 2017 or nearly three out of four direct travel dollars spent.

Overnight visitors to Hood River County logged just over one million person-nights in 2017. More than one out of 10 persons (12.0%) staying overnight in Hood River during 2017 were visitors, not residents. Lincoln County led Oregon, with a ratio of nearly three overnight visitors for every 10 residents in 2017 (27.8%).
Accommodations led all commodities purchased, capturing $34.1 million, followed by food services at $31.6 million. Together, accommodation and food services captured over 60 percent of Hood River County’s 2017 destination spending.
Accommodation and food services dominated Hood River County’s travel generated employment trends, much like its travel spending. Accommodation and food services produced 870 jobs in 2017 or three out of four of the 1,160 generated by travel spending across all industries. Within the accommodation and food services industry, direct travel spending produced just over half of Hood River County jobs, employing 870 out of 1,680 in 2017.
Overnight travelers spent about $185 in Hood River County per person, averaging $79 per day over a 2.3 night stay. Traveling parties averaged 2.6 persons, spending $208 per day or $475 for the trip. Hotel, motel and short-term vacation rental (STVR) stays generated much higher visitor expenditures than other types of overnight accommodation. Hotel, motel and STVR guests spent $237 per trip to Hood River County while staying 1.9 nights. Party size in the Hotel, motel and STVR group averaged 2.4 persons, generating $306 per day or $578 per trip.
