Hood River County Visitors Logged Over One Million Overnight Stays in 2018

Dean Runyan Associates (www.deanrunyan.com) recently released Oregon Travel Impacts (1992 - 2018p), a study detailing the significance of the travel industry in Oregon and its 36 counties. According to the study, direct travel spending in Oregon reached $12.3 billion in 2018.

Overnight visitors to Hood River County logged more than one million person-nights in 2018. More than one out of 10 persons (11.8%) staying overnight in Hood River were visitors, not residents. Lincoln County led Oregon, with a ratio of nearly three overnight visitors for every 10 residents (27.8%).
Direct travel spending in Hood River County reached $114.4 million in 2018 – an increase of 2.7 percent over 2017’s $111.4 million. Overnight visitors represented the biggest slice of travel spending, shelling out $83.1 million in 2018 or nearly three dollars out of every four dollars $4 direct travel dollars spent.

Accommodations led all commodities purchased, capturing $35.3 million, followed by food services at $32.3 million. Together, accommodation and food services captured 59 percent of Hood River County’s 2018 destination spending.
Accommodation and food services dominated Hood River County’s travel generated employment trends, much like its travel spending. Accommodation and food services produced 870 jobs in 2018 or three out of four jobs generated by travel spending across all industries. Hood River County’s accommodation and food services industry averaged 1,720 jobs in 2018, with direct travel spending responsible for just over half the industry’s total.
Overnight travelers spent about $191 in Hood River County per person, averaging $82 per day over a 2.3 night stay. Traveling parties averaged 2.6 persons, spending $215 per day or $493 for the trip. Hotel, motel, and short-term vacation rental (STVR) stays generated much higher visitor expenditures than other types of overnight accommodation. Hotel, motel, and STVR guests spent $246 per trip to Hood River County while staying 1.9 nights. Party size in the hotel, motel and STVR group averaged 2.4 persons, generating $318 per day or $602 per trip.
