Since Oregon’s COVID-19 restrictions began in mid-March, there have been a record number of initial claims filed for unemployment benefits over the past five weeks with the statewide total over 333,000.

We have more detailed county and industry information on those initial claims that have been processed through the system. Klamath County residents experienced record numbers of initial claims for unemployment benefits with 2,353 claims processed in the past five weeks. For reference, 353 claims were processed in the same five-week period last year.

  • The largest number of claims can be found in the accommodation and food services sector with a total of 603 initial claims processed. Bars and restaurants were among the first, and hardest hit, businesses throughout the state.
  • The top three industry sectors with the greatest number of claims are accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance, and manufacturing. These sectors account for over 53 percent of the initial claims processed in Klamath County.
  • Other industries feeling a significant impact in Klamath County are retail trade, construction, and administrative and waste services.

Data showing the initial impacts of COVID-19 to the county’s employment and unemployment numbers will be available in late May.
