Occupations with the Most 2018 Vacancies in Eastern Oregon

According to the most recent Oregon Employment Department Job Vacancy Survey of private employers, the occupation with the most job openings in Eastern Oregon (including Baker, Grant, Harney, Malheur, Morrow, Umatilla, Union, and Wallowa counties) in 2018 was laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand with 153, or 9 percent of the total vacancies within the region. This occupation involves manually moving freight, stock, or other materials or performing other general labor. It does not include material moving workers who use power equipment or laborers who work in construction trades. The average hourly wage for this occupation within the region is $15.21. The typical entry level education for this occupation is less than high school but those with a high school diploma or equivalent have a competitive advantage.

Packaging and filling machine operators and tenders had the next highest number of vacancies within the region, accounting for about 7 percent of openings. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers; farmworkers and laborers, crop, nursery, and greenhouse; and combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food, each with about 5 percent of openings, round out the top five.
