Wasco County’s youth (ages zero to 17) represented 21.9 percent of its total population, while at the opposite end of the spectrum, retirement age adults and seniors (age 65 and over) held a 21.4 percent share. Working age adults (age 18 to 64) represented 56.8 percent of Wasco County’s population, lagging Oregon’s 61.7 percent. Looking at the broad age makeup, Wasco County’s youth population was slightly larger than Oregon’s and its senior population was considerably larger, skewing its comparative share of working age adults.
A more detailed population by age breakout for Wasco County and Oregon yields essentially the same points. Adults age 60 years and older represented a much larger share of Wasco County’s population. Together, the 60 and older group represented 28.9 percent of Wasco County’s population, well above Oregon’s 24.2 percent. Youth in the zero to four and five to nine age groups were also overrepresented, holding 12.3 percent of Wasco County’s population, relative to Oregon’s 11.4 percent. Wasco County made up for these differences by having a comparatively lower share of its population across age groups 20 through 49.
Females outnumbered males in Wasco County by a slim margin, with 50.5 percent of its population female and 49.5 percent male. Females held an advantage of 0.7 percent statewide, representing 50.7 percent of Oregon’s 2018 population. Eleven Oregon counties, all rural, were led by males in 2018, while the remaining 25 counties trended female.
In Wasco County, females led all age groups 70 and above. In the 85+ age group, females held a 64.9 percent share, while in the 80 to 84 age group females represented 55.8 percent. Females also held an advantage statewide in these senior age groups and with similar margins. Two youth age groups in Wasco County trended female, including ages zero to four and 10 to 14 years. But males countered by leading age groups 15 through 29.
