In 2017, employment growth and low unemployment rates continued throughout the Portland region. With nonfarm employment of nearly 300,000 in December 2017, Washington County accounts for 24 percent of the Portland Metropolitan Statistical Area’s total employment. More than 28 percent of the jobs gained since the recession low-point in 2009 have been in Washington County. The county has also experienced the fastest rates of job growth out of the recession, recovering total employment to pre-recessionary levels six months before Multnomah County and eight months before the region as a whole.
