Eastern Oregon Projected to Add 4,500 Jobs by 2024September 8, 2016
According to the Oregon Employment Department's 2014-2024 Industry Employment Projections, the Eastern Oregon area (Baker, Grant, Harney, Malheur, Morrow, Umatilla, Union, and Wallowa counties) is projected to grow from 74,000 jobs to 78,500 jobs by 2024, a growth rate of 6 percent. The industries projected to add the most jobs are private education and health services; natural resources, mining, and construction (mostly in natural resources); and trade, transportation, and utilities. No major private industry sectors are projected to decline. Government job growth is projected in local and state sectors, much of which is public education, while federal government jobs are projected to decline, estimated to fall by 100 jobs.

With a growth rate of 13 percent, the information sector is projected to grow at the fastest rate by 2024 in Eastern Oregon. Private education and health services (+11%); other services and private households (+10%); professional and business services (+9%); natural resources, mining, and construction (+7%); and leisure and hospitality (+7%) round out the top five fastest growing sectors in Eastern Oregon.
