Be Ready to Communicate in New Ways Online

February 22, 2023

The pandemic has forced many employers to change how they interact with workers, and people applying for jobs. If an employer is planning to host job interviews online, follow these steps to make sure you give yourself the best chance for a good first impression.

You would never want to show up to an interview late, and online interviews are no different. Log in and be available before the meeting is scheduled to start. Check that any microphone or camera you plan to use is working. Make sure you already have installed ZOOM or whatever program is being used for the interview.

An online job interview is no less formal than an in-person interview. Use this time to present yourself professionally. Dress appropriately for the interview. Make sure the space around you, or the decorative background you choose is not distracting. You should be the star of the show.

Communicating online is a different experience than in-person. Wait for people to complete their questions before responding. Avoid talking over other people. Interviews give you the opportunity to share your knowledge, skills, and abilities. You cannot do that if the employer cannot hear you.
