Building Your Career Path, One New Skill at a Time

March 30, 2026

Life is bound to have twists and turns, and that is no different for your career path! It is unlikely that you will have the same job or work at the same company for your entire career. Being well-equipped to handle these changes will make the adjustments more seamless. So, how can you prepare?

Start building up skills now. Learn as much as you can about topics that interest you. If there’s a free class at the library that excites you, sign up! If the community college has an evening class on a topic you’ve been wanting to learn about, sign up! If you stumble across an eLearning course for a relevant subject, sign up! You get the gist: sign up!

Gaining knowledge, skills, and abilities can open roads to a wide range of jobs. Hobbies and volunteering count too, and these extra pursuits can teach you a lot about what motivates you and inspires you. As you build your path, there are new horizons to explore throughout your career.

Networking is another essential skill for handling career changes. Your network of professional connections helps you learn about new jobs and encourages others to think of you when they see a job that might be a great fit! When you experience an unexpected transition, people in your network may have the perfect opportunity for you at their fingertips.

Enhance your professional network by connecting with teachers and professors, career counselors, and other people already in your life. Build relationships. These initial contacts can lead to new opportunities for learning and deepening your connection to a job or industry. You’re not alone in preparing for the future or searching for your next job – rely on your network!

A career is a long journey. When the adversity of life appears, those unexpected twists in the path, you can be ready for the next step. Today is the best time to start preparing!
